Short-Term Analysis (through Friday Oct 2nd)

Solid pulse of southerly groundswell peaks early on Wednesday: A stronger pulse of reinforcing south groundswell exhibiting 14 to 15 second peak periods is on track to boost wave heights across northern NSW southern exposures, bumping up in size later on Tuesday and probably peaking in the 3 to 5ft range from Byron south early on Wednesday. It originates from a broad SW fetch of 30 to 35 knots that expanded throughout our south swell window over the weekend.

Its evolution is linked to the eastward migration of a broadscale extratropical low that intensified as it tracked south of New Zealand on Sunday, setting up a vast wind-field in conjunction with a large high pressure system building in below South Australia and Victoria.

Wave energy briefly settles on Wednesday arvo and Thursday morning, ahead of another strong pulse arriving later Thursday and throughout Friday: Wednesday morning’s pulse should mark an interim peak in size, leading in a drop in size into the afternoon, before levelling off at more accessible levels by Thursday morning.

Having said that, there’s still likely to be slower, but still sizeable sets ranging from 3 to 4ft across southern exposures from Byron south. That’s linked to yet another, longer-range SSE pulse on track to reinforce surf-heights throughout Thursday and into Friday, capping off a full week of solid surf for the entire NSW coast.
