Short-Term Analysis (through Sunday 25 October)

A series of sizeable, overlapping pulses of SW groundswell keep wave heights running at solid levels across all coasts for days to come. Friday offers up a brief window of good to great conditions, prior to a pattern of fresh cross-onshore winds becoming established over the course of the weekend and early to mid next week.

Saturday: Surfing prospects grind to a halt by Saturday morning, following the passage of a trough and deepening low moving across Victoria and Bass Strait. The frontal boundary leads in a strong onshore SSW airflow supported by a ridge building from the west, resulting in a full day of ugly, onshore conditions state-wide.

That also coincides with a renewed building trend in SW swell, linked to a deep mid-latitude low tracking below Tasmania during the day. The low aims a broad and expansive 30-35 knot SW fetch at Victoria in conjunction with a high moving in below Western Australia, triggering a building trend in energy that’s set to come to a head on Sunday.

Sunday: Large, mid-period SW groundswell looks like topping out at an unruly 6ft+, with 8ft sets not out of the question across the exposed beaches during the morning. That’s likely to coincides with early SSE winds, coming around to the SE and ESE, following the continued eastward movement of the aforementioned high below the mainland and approaching Tasmania’s west coast as the day progresses.

Long-Term Analysis (Sunday 18 and beyond)
