While most Australians were all tucked up in bed, dreaming of sheep leaping over moons and peaceful things like that, Tyler Wright went out and claimed herself a piece the 2014 WCT by winning the US Open. Wright defeated Stephanie Gilmore in a wave starved event final at Huntington Beach, both of whom needed a result to keep themselves in contention for this year's title race.

In the semi-finals Wrght defeated Hawaiian Malia Manuel to turn the finals day into an all-Aussie affair, while Gilmore took down an in-form Sally Fitzgibbons, who with a 3rd place finish has edged even closer to World No.1 Carissa Moore (who bowed out in the quarter-finals for a 5th place finish).

The World Championship Tour rankings currently see Moore retain the no.1 spot on 44,900 points with Fitzgibbons breathing down her neck in 2nd on 44,700 points as we head into the back-half of the year and the remaining four events. The Women's WCT will reconvene at Trestles with the Swatch Women's Pro in September.

On the men's side of the table, Brazil's Filipe Toledo took out the WQS Prime against countryman Willian Cardoso.
