Shark Attack In Queensland

31 Dec 2015 0 Share

There was no doubt that there would be an increase in shark sightings this summer with the heightened media presence on the topic as well as a well-documented increase in shark activity close to shore all round Australia. This week alone there has been beach closures on the NSW south coast around Jervis Bay, Perth, the WA south-west and Queensland.

Today it has been reported that a 31-year-old man has suffered serious lacerations from a shark to his arms and legs after spearfishing near off the coast of Yeppoon in north Queensland. The man was airlifted to Rockhampton hospital shortly after he was assisted by the Yeppoon Coast Guards. It is reported that the man is in a stable condition but has suffered severe bleeding from the wounds.

Western Australia's beach closures today were the result of effective shark tag and track systems. It is reported that a tagged tiger shark was in close proximity to populated swimming areas around Cottesloe this morning which prompted Surf Life Saving WA to sound alarms and close the beaches. Smith's Beach, Bunker Bay, Rottnest Island and Yallingup were also affected by closures but have been reopened. FOR UPDATED SHARK INFORMATION IN WA VISIT SHARKSMART

Meanwhile on the NSW south coast at the popular Hyams Beach in Jervis Bay, aerial patrols sighted a school of up to 20 sharks before sounding the alarm to close surrounding beaches. Also, on the south coast along Wollongong and Shellharbour there have been various sightings by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter.

Surf Life Saving NSW has released a statement saying, "While sharks are a concern, there is a far greater risk of being caught in a rip current and drowning at an unpatrolled beach than ever being attacked by a shark. If people are concerned by sharks they should swim and surf at patrolled beaches so lifesavers and lifeguards can alert them to any threats or hazards including the presence of sharks."

In 2015, Queensland had 4 shark attacks compared with a staggering 14 shark attacks in NSW, including one fatality.
