Bells Beach Was Big On Wednesday

4th May 2016 - SURF COAST, VICTORIA

We chased a big WSW groundswell to Victoria on Wednesday. We were thinking it would be up in the 6-8 foot range, and you could say it was, occasionally but realistically it was 4-6 foot with the occasional 8-foot sets. The conditions were offshore and there was a powerful energy in the water from the groundswell.

It was an exceptional day of waves.

We tracked this swell out of the SE Indian Ocean with the source developing and tracking up below WA and the Great Australian Bite. It maintained a huge fetch aimed at Bass Strait over the weekend and early this week holding out until Thursday 5th.

The swell delivered in-line with expectations, chief surf forecaster Ben Macartney saying "I was anticipating a lot of inconsistency in the upper range because of the WSW direction and the longer range of the swell source. The really consistently big swells you see there usually arise from big lows that form right below Bass Strait and they have a lot of south in them and they come steaming in. These longer range swells with the west in them are always going to be big waits for the long waves."
