COASTALWATCH | Swell Diary

On Sunday 5 June, The Hunter, Sydney metropolitan region and NSW South Coast went to sleep to the sound of belting rain, flooded streets, houses (and pools) falling into the ocean and howling onshore winds. It was hard to believe, trying to get to sleep last night that the morning would bring the offshore perfection of outer reefs, bombies and points, severe erosion and the receding of water.

Monday morning was met with a dash to the beach. On approach, the ominous roar of the ocean that felt like deep bass blaring from an amplifier. How big could it really be? Questioned thousands pre-dawn. The sight as the sun rose through the clouds was everything hoped for as clean and big as the northern NSW and Queensland breaks had received on Sunday. It was like a drug, sitting there gazing at the deep, constant energy building from the horizon. Gasps, screams and the sincere recognition of a significant swell event.

If you were a big wave surfer, this is the kind of day you dream about happening in your backyard. This was the day you could have the line-up to yourself (in most places). This was Monday 6th June 2016.

The Sydney Northern Beaches surf reporter, The Captain nailed it his spiel, right before he scored an epic bomb set (see below). "Heavy, surreal waves in some spots. Really solid and quality in others. Swell ENE @13 seconds, Winds WNW-W 12-28 Knots. Size probably 8-10ft but just saw a set 12ft +. The coast has been ravished with beaches gone; my boat washed away, house nearly flooded and general carnage along the entire Sydney coastline. It's anyone's guess on banks with massive amount of water moving and of dubious quality, but there will be spots for those keen and experienced enough."
