Shark Nets Or Not? Have Your Say Right Here

COASTALWATCH | LATEST NEWS

On Wednesday 12 October 2016, NSW Premier Mike Baird committed to the installation of shark nets on the NSW North Coast following the second shark attack in two weeks in the Ballina area.

Last Thursday 6 October, Coastalwatch held a live shark discussion in the midst of this crisis to bring to the table some clarity surrounding how the locals are feeling, what the real issues are and where the government body, the NSW Department of Primary Industries stand. We wanted to provide an un-edited space of clarity and education.

During this discussion a number of suggested options to deal with the current situation were addressed with three distinct options arising; Work out a non-threatening, marine-friendly technology, the installation of shark nets similar to those existing from Newcastle to Wollongong in NSW and finally a shark cull.

This is one of the most emotionally charged issues facing coastal communities in Australia right now, and for the residents of Ballina, Lennox and Byron Bay it's a real life or death situation. So we're throwing the question out there. We want to know exactly where you stand in numbers.
