All You Need To Know About Channel Island's OG Flyer

This week Christmas is coming early for one lucky reader... we’re giving away* Channel Islands' most popular selling sled – the OG Flyer. It’s one of the designs that made short, fat and wide desirable, and perfect when the waves are less than ideal. We caught up with Britt Merrick to learn what keeps him and the crew at Channel Islands inspired.
Inspiration... "It has always been the surfers that have inspired us. What surfers want to feel, do, and experience is where we take our cues. And when you are trying to deliver that for the best surfers in the world, it is a pursuit that never gets old. Our passion is making surfers happy. Additionally, we just love surfing. I surf just about everyday. When the waves are pumping, I’m surfing, not shaping. But I am always amped to get back in the bay and make myself, and ultimately others, something that keeps the stoke alive!"
The OG Flyer... "The Flyer is the board that we always hear people say they couldn’t live without if they could only have a one board quiver. The staying power of the Flyer has been amazing… it has consistently been one of our most popular designs for 20 years! There isn't another board in our history that has been so loved for so long."
Why short fat and wide? "It isn’t really rocket science, but my dad knew what was missing when some of the best surfers on the planet were lacking speed and flow in lesser waves. Again, it was the needs of the surfers that progressed the design. They didn’t necessarily know what they were missing from a design perspective, but they knew what they were lacking in their surfing – speed, flow and performance in crap waves. My dad was able to interpret that need and bend the direction of volume and rockers just enough to get them there. Taylor Knox recently said that when he got his first Flyer he was happily shocked! He had no idea he could surf that well in small waves!"
