Fin McGill (Haw) and Vahine Fierro (PYF) have claimed the 2017 WSL Men’s and Women’s World Junior Championships at Kiama NSW. The business end of competition got underway this morning, making use of 3-4 foot lumps rolling into Bombo Beach as 28 heats got busy in the tricky conditions, all vying for a podium finish.

Among them was Finn McGill, who bounced back from a recent ankle injury to take on Joh Azuchi (JPN) in a scintillating final between the two surfers. In the end it was Finn who rose to the mantle, stringing together some dynamic backhand snaps to post an 8.00 and 8.90 and amass a total of 16.90 and leaving Azuchi to chase a combination score in the dying minutes.

“I can barely talk right now it hasn’t really sunk in just yet,” McGill said. “After coming off an injury I wasn’t expecting too much of a result at this event. I was never feeling in much of a rhythm and seemed to just be sneaking through heats. It all changed in my Quarterfinal and all of a sudden I began to build and feel the flow. Then once I was in the Final I knew I had just one more heat to surf, so I knew I just had to wait for the good ones and surf them well.”

In the women’s, Vahine Fierro had her work cut out for her, having narrowly missed an initial place in the main event by three spots. But the Tahitian did not let a wildcard opportunity pass her by, building confidence heat by heat with some great scores that took her to the final against Summer Macedo. Fierro took the reigns from the get-go posting a 12.83 heat total with stylish form in the less than ideal conditions. Macedo couldn’t quite reconcile, leaving the door wide open for Vahine to claim the WSL World Junior Championship, a first ever for any Tahitian surfer.

“This is the first time I have been to the World Junior Championship and to win is so special, especially when I was so close to missing out on the event. That was my third Final with Summer which is so cool as we are great friends. I’m really speechless at the moment, I just can’t believe it.”

Congratulations to all the finalists and competitors who will no doubt be chasing points on the WQS in the not too distant future.
