COASTALWATCH | THIS WEEK IN SURFING

Ten Things From Surfing & The Internet On The Week That Was March 23, 2018

1. A Cock-Up At The Australian Boardriders Battle

Oh dear. So, as you remember, the Nudie Australian Boardriders Battle was a fantastic event that was won by Culburra Boardriders in spectacular fashion, with Mikey Wright's sprint finish.

This week Surfing Australia released a statement addressing a critical human error in the adding up of the points to determine who should have been in that final grand final final. Turns out that Culburra Boardriders should never have even been in it, and that Elouera Boardriders were the team who righfully should have surfed in their place.

Yikes.

The statement read:
"We take this matter extremely seriously and we have communicated with the President of Elouera Boardriders Club to clarify the situation and offer our sincere apologies. We have provided the Elouera club with prizemoney compensation to cover what they should have had the opportunity to compete for in the final. The Elouera Boardriders were obviously disappointed but understanding and appreciative of our swift and honest approach to the unfortunate situation."

So they did get some cash, which is nice. And Eloura Boardriders president was quoted with this terribly gracious response:

"Whilst we’re disappointed to have missed the opportunity to surf in the Grand Final this year we completely understand that mistakes like this can happen in sport. We really appreciate the professional manner in which Surfing Australia have handled this and are satisfied the outcome is fair and just for all parties involved."

So, what of the result? Well, it'll remain the same. Culburra Boardriders remain the Australian Champs after winning the final, even though they shouldn't have been there. I wonder how Merewether, whom finished second, feel about all this. You can read the full statement and all the details on the Surfing Australia site.

2. Keep Your Eye On Kael Walsh, He Is Awesome

Oh, to be a West Australian, to blast songs like this one by Pond, to wake every morning and pray at the feet of a framed portrait of Sabotaj era Taj Burrow, to play this video of 18-year-old Kael Walsh going mental in Sumatra and Hawaii on repeat all day, every day for the next week. God bless WA.

3. Happily Stoked Gets Super Shacks

While the final of the Quiksilver and Roxy Pros were stationed up at the famed break of Kirra Point, Australia(!), a couple of surfers who were so depressed about not being amongst it had to drown their sorrows in these unbelievable Gold Coast tubes somewhere else. Where? Not sure. Probably (REDACTED. Reason: Mike is a moron). But maybe not. Featuring Josh Kerr, Sebastien Ziets, Soli Bailey and Sheldon Simkus. Cut to 3.35 for the best tube you’ll see this week, this year, this ever?

4. Asher Pacey Getting Lots of Tubes Too

Asher Pacey stars in this Zion Wetsuits clip of that epic Gita swell that has the best title ever: Pace Ventura, Pit Detective. Gotta love a 90s Jim Carey reference. You also gotta love long tubes surfed incredibly well on fun-looking fishes. You also gotta love Garrett Parkes. You also gotta love 90s North Melbourne Kangaroos Ruckman Corey McKernan. You gotta.

5. Conner and Parker Coffin at that Snapper Session

“Dream come true. Mick called us and said to come do step-offs with him at Snapper, behind the rock. We’re psyching!” Cut to Conner lining up a Snapper drainer so sick it needs to be checked into a hospital. (I don’t like that last sentence at all, guys. But writing a caption for surf clips in This Week In Surfing every week for five years, it gets a little difficult sometimes. I mean, how many ways are there to describe people riding waves? Sometimes you just gave to roll with a bad sick/hospital analogy and then move on with your life). Anyway, featuring the Coffin brothers of course, World Champs Mick Fanning and Joel Parkinson, and up and coming Hawaiian gun Seth Moniz, it’s a fun time.

6. Here Is Kolohe and John John Talking About John John's Fall

Remember that time John John Florence fell over. Here it is again. This time with commentary by Kolohe Andino and John John himself. Seems like a missed opportunity for some Australia's Funniest Home Videos style sound effects.

7. The Dooley Episode 52

It's another episode of The Dooley, where Danny Johnson and I talk all things surfing from the past week. Just ignore the parts where Danny says Danny Wills is a goofy-footer, and where we both say the last goofy to win Bells was Occy. We're idiots.

8. The Next Step

What a brilliant mini-documentary on James McKean, a 14-year-old super grommet that was there for one of Shipstern’s historic early sessions with Mark Mathews and co, before going on to become one of the regular core-lord chargers at Australia’s most famous slab.

9. Sea Wolf B-Sides

Sea Wolf is a beautiful surf movie project between Canadian surfer Pete Devries and filmmaker Ben Gulliver that takes in a wonderful smattering of cold water surf spots the world over, and includes trips with the likes of Chippa Wilson, Balaram Stack, Cam Richards and more, over a two year period. By the looks of this ten minute clip of stuff that didn't make the final cut, it's an top notch flick.

10. The Rip Curl Pro Bells Starts This Week

Hooray! And here's a teaser to get excited for it.

11. Oh Man, I Forgot!

Laura Enever is a boss! She surfed macking Shippies! Check the shot! Unfortunately we don't have footage to watch from this session yet, but fortunately that's because it will be in a film project that Enever is working on. It's called Undone.

This Week's Classic Surf Music Memory

This Week In Surfing's Classic Surf Music Memory is brought to you by Summer Bright Lager

Did you know that back in 1984, Pam Burridge (1990 World Champ!) released a hit surf-pop-rock single under the name, Pam & the Passions? It ended up on a major compilation put out by British label Hot Records. What about the McCoy she's riding in... is it the Coke Classic? The 7" single, titled "Summertime All 'Round The World" also featured a B-side called "Sunnyboyfriend", which is apparently a reworking of a tune "Sunny Girlfriend" by the Monkees. It's one of life's great tragedies that we can't find "Sunnyboyfriend" anywhere on the Internet today. At least we'll always have this very fun track. Take it away, Pam!

Check out Summer Bright's Lager's Summer Sessions Music Tour this summer, where unfortunately Pam Burridge and the Passions won't be playing, but Alex Lahey will.

And that was this week in surfing. Have a good weekend everyone. Go Kangas.
