COASTALWATCH

As the coronavirus pandemic continues to unfold, everyone across the world is experiencing unprecedented, fast-changing and ever-confusing times – and that includes us surfers and general ocean lovers across Australia’s coasts. But one thing we can be certain of is that social distancing and self isolating is needed in order to beat the coronavirus. And the sooner and more completely we all do that, the sooner we can get back to what we love.

Check out health.gov.au and follow their guidelines to practising good hygiene, social distancing and following the limits on public gatherings.

We all know how good surfing is for us – body and mind.

However, it is extremely important that we also do all the right things to slow the spread of coronavirus. If you can’t get to the beach alone — no standing next to your mates in the carpark, no chilling on the beach with a group of people — just please don’t. Stay one and a half metres apart. There are many asymptomatic folks out there who can spread this thing. If conditions pose even a slight risk to injury don’t go out, eliminate the chance you might take a hospital bed from someone who’ll need it down the line.

Ace Buchan has led by example: "The only thing that is going to stop this is US. YOU and ME," he posted to Instagram. "We have to work together by staying apart to stop the spread of COVID-19. Social distancing or isolation if necessary. Stay apart or stay at home.

"I’ve seen so many people taking the piss here in Australia carrying on as if things are normal. They’re not. Young people thinking it doesn’t affect us. It does...Let’s work together and use this time to slow down, take a breath and reconnect with what’s important."

It’s important to remember that COVID-19 is sneaky. Asymptomatic means you can have the infection with no symptoms and therefore be passing it along to others. Assume you have the infection until you know you don’t and act accordingly around others; keep your distance and quarantine yourself as much as possible.

Bottom line: We need to take this thing seriously, which means we all practise social distancing right now. Be safe and let’s watch out for each other as best we can.
