Horrible news is rocking the surf community today after a 15-year-old surfer has died from a shark attack on the NSW Mid-North Coast.

The ABC is reporting that the boy was surfing at Wilsons Headland, Wooli Beach, halfway between Coffs Harbour and Grafton, just before 2:30pm when he was attacked.

The attack left him with severe leg injuries. A number of surfers came to the teen's aid, paddling him into shore where he died at the scene, despite CPR efforts to revive him.

It is unknown at this stage what breed of shark was responsible for the attack.

This is the second surfer to die from a shark incident in the last two months, after 60-year-old Tugun surfer Rob Pedretti suffered a shark bite on June 7 while surfing at Salt Beach on the Tweed Coast.

Wooli, Diggers Camp and Minnie Water beaches have been closed since the attack.

NSW Police – who will be liaising with the Department of Primary Industry to investigate the circumstances of the death – have urged beachgoers follow safety advice from Surf Life Saving NSW and by visiting the Department of Primary Industry’s website dpi.nsw.gov.au/sharks and the SharkSmart app.

Coastalwatch and the Australian surf communitiy's thoughts are with the victim's family, as well as the communities of the mid-north coast.
