Margaret River Classic 2008
October 31st - November 2nd - Surfers Point.

The Margaret River Classic is one of the states most prestigious and longest running surfiing events, with a list of previous winners that have all played a mjor role in shaping surfing within WA. Each year the Classic attracts a quality field of local and interstate surfers, and this year was no different.

The three day event saw a swag of impressive surfers converge on the Margaret River area, and all were rewarded with a perfectly groomed swell that will made the 2008 Classic one to remember. 4-6ft waves made Saturday's heats some of the best in the events 29 years history.

Surfers from WA and also the East coast, including members the Billabong team went about setting a standard of surfing that was without a doubt the best the competition has ever seen.

Former Margaret River local Tom Innes, showed why he's regarded as one of WA's best, with an impressive display over the weekend that saw him take out the Open Men’s title for a second time. Innes who's style is perfectly suited to the waves at Main Break remained undefeated for the entire competition and claimed the events best wave award in the process. Hot on his heals in second place and showing why he's one of Australia's best free surfers and big wave chargers, Dylan Longbottom (South Coast, NSW) also looked suited to the waves on offer and made the trip West a worthwhile one. WA legend and another big wave cahrger Paul ‘Antman’ Paterson (City Beach) finished third with Sam Wrench (Ulladulla, NSW) in fourth.

The Pro Junior division was always going to be an exciting affair filled with some real up and coming talent. All four finalist have all competed at the ASP Pro Junior Series in 2008 and the level of surfing was through the roof. Shaun Howe (Kalbarri) used his stylish top to bottom surfing to take out the win. Matt Hewitt (New Zealand) finished in second, Zac Ogram (Yallingup) third and Jerome Forrest (Mandurah) fourth.

Felicity Palmateer (Hillarys) went back to back taking out the Open Womens division with an outstanding performance. Palmateer stormed to victory with Bec Sheedy Ryan (Margaret River) second, Merome Lumsdane third and young Bronte Macaulay (Gracetown) fourth.

Local surfboard shaper and ex world tour surfer Dave Macaulay (Gracetown) performed well in the Over 40’s to take out the division ahead of Dave Chick (Margaret River) in second with commentator Mark Clift (Padbury) third and Glen Dalbock (Margaret River) fourth.

Well renowned free surfer Dino Adrian took out the locals division with a dominate display of surfing, in second was Andrew Sheridan, followed by Jake Jackovich and Rohan Annersley.

Thanks to the strong support from the Margaret River Boardriders, Surfing WA, and the local surfing and business community of Margaret River have helped the 2008 Margaret River Classic become one of the highlights of the Western Australian surfing calendar.
