Ten Things from Surfing & the Internet on the Week That Was May 29 2020

1. It was Proper Pumping!

Like, swell-of-the-year pumping! Like Nick Carroll-paddling-out-on-a 9'8" pumping! Like every-injury-I've-ever-maybe-had-flairing-up-at-the-same-time-and-man-I'm-so-bummed-I-can't-be-out-there,-no-really-I-am...pumping! While the whole east coast from south of Sydney to the Gold Coast seemed to get a lot of it, Merewether seemed to cop it the sweetest as detailed in Sean Doherty's story on the "Day of Days"over here – the fact the tow dudes were ferrying paddle surfers out the back all day is all-time.

And for more delightful writing on the swell event, have a read of Nick Carroll's piece: "The Swell That Blew the COVID Cobwebs Right Off".

Below is the video you might have already seen, of Paul Mountford and Rhys Smith towing Merewether on Saturday May 23.

2. More Merewether Gold

This video only goes live at 5pm today, but we're pretty sure it's going to be a ripper. It's by the person who put together the tow edit above from Merewether, only this time it's the paddle surfers cut. Given it's got a screengrab of that ridiculous, meaty Ryan Callinan turn... it's going to be a must-watch.

3. The Rock-Off Video Seen Round The World

Oh, the poor guy. Out of place, out of depth, out of his damn mind. This video has done 255,000 views in just five days, and just may be on track to be the most watched rock-off video outside of the Kook of the Day Instagram. Hit play for three minutes of agonising, shade and fruit suspense.

4. Perfect Goldy Pits

Luke Hynd, Sheldon Simkus, Wade Carmichael and more got the best of the Gold Coast beachies durfing the swell.

5. Red Bull's New Doco Series, Inflection Point Ep 1

Kings of the surf doco Youtube, Red Bull have dropped a new one that takes a close look at those final two QS events of the year that go down on the North Shore – focussing on Jack Robbo, Cam Richards, Benji Brand and Barron Mamiya. It's solid.

6. Do You Know Jake Vincent?

He's a Sunshine Coast free-spirited freesurfer punk fellow in the mould of Ozzie Wright, and these are his leftover clips from the recent Rage 3 movie. Surfing is fun!

7. Remember that CT in Mexico?

The WSL put out a 22 minute highlight vid of the Rip Curl Search event from 2006, and oh boy it's as good as you remember. Bobby Martinez! Andy Irons! Yuri Sodre!

8. Occy and Laura Talk 'Undone'

Occy's covid video call podcast gets Laura Enever on board to talk about her epic new movie, Undone, which was released to iTunes and Vimeo this week. For a full review of the film, read Sean Doherty's piece: Laura Enever's 'Undone' Finds Lightness in a World of Heavy.

9. This Kid is 13 and He's Ripping

Central Coast grom Hughie Vaughan is getting shacked, stomping airs, and looking a bit like Mick Fanning in Justin Gane's Pulse. I'm buying stocks early!

10. Your Weekly Mase Ho Stoke-Out Clip

Here he goes again, riding a really fun looking wave breaking directly on about 15 centimetres of gnarly rocks. He gives and he gives and he gives our guy Mason Ho.
