Ten Things from Surfing & the Internet on the Week That Was October 23 2020

1. Medina Isn't Serious All the Time

Did you know Brazil's beachies were this good? Gabriel Medina, like the rest of the world, has spent a lot of time around home in 2020. This is what it looks like when perhaps the world's most competitive surfer gets to spend more time freesurfing than preparing for heat wins and heat interferences: Wedges, and tubes and a two-time World Champ converge for a surfprisingly froth-high edit.

2. You Need to Watch this Mark Mathews Piece – The Other Side of Fear

Kings of content, Red Bull Media House have produced an hour long doco on the wild and inspiring story of Mark Mathews journey back to surfing after majorly injuring his shoulder at Jaws, and then later severeing an artery in his leg. Over the past decade, Mathews has been arguably Australia's premier big wave surfer, and on top of that, he makes a living as a motivational speaker... with all that in mind, there's no wonder that The Other Side of Fear is an inspirational goldmine of a surf movie.

You can find it on Surfline.

3. How's a Finless Go at Teahupo'o?

Pretty well actually, when it's ridden by William Aliotti. Granted, the Teahupo'o in this clip is far from Code Red, but it's pretty sweet nonetheless. The video also uncovers a public secret about the famous Tahitian death-tube: it's a really fun wave when it's three-foot.

4. More Wade Pentacoastal B-Sides

The fourth and final drop of B-Sides from Wade Goodall's epic film, Pentacoastal. Comprising an all Aus-based selection of shred, it's a bit of a head-scratcher as to how these clips didn't make the final cut. Makes you want to go back and revisit the original.

5. Zeke Lau and Friends in Indo

Speaking of outtakes, Zeke Lau and his friends Barron Mamiya, Parker Coffin and the Moniz Brothers went on an Indo boat trip for Snapt 4. As Australian surfers, it stings a little to see this doesn't it? It's so close, Indo, it's right there... but can we go? No.

6. Nate Florence Backdoor Pipe Raw Footage

We're heading into a peculiar Hawaiian winter, how surfing's Mecca will look and feel with most of the world unable to travel is yet to be seen, but the waves certainly won't care. They'll be there and breaking like they always have whatever happens. And the locals like Nate Florence will also be there. Here Nate gives those of us who will never paddle out into the world's most famous line-up a raw insight into just what it's like to get a perfect dawn session at the Banzai Pipeline.

7. Remember Biggest Wednesday?

Tim Bonython's Biggest Wednesday is an iconic piece of the childhoods of surfers who grew up in the late 90s. In suburban Melbourne we passed it around at primary school and freaked out on the ridiculous cover and argued whether it was real or not. And then when we finally watched the thing, it blew our tiny minds. This vid is cut from the movie – a historic session at Outer Log Cabins in January 1998, featuring Ross Clarke Jones ,Tony Ray, Shawn Briley, Noah Johnson, Dan Moore, Ken Bradshaw, Troy Alotis, Aaron Lambert and David "Kawika" Stant.

8. Leo's Italy Vlog, Surfing Il Banzai

After doing some shopping, Leo Fioravanti takes us to the surf spot he grew up surfing, a righthand pointbreak called Banzai. Not far from Rome, apparently it's the most crowded surf spot in Italy. Surfing starts at 3.30.

9. Pumping Empty Cokes

The Other Side of Paradise is a short clip by Brazilian surfer/filmer Leo Neves, who had travelled to the Maldives, the island of Thulusdhoo to be specific, before COVID hit and then was unable to get a flight out of the place. Just so happens that while he's been there, Cokes got good. Also, it's the second "The Other Side of..." video that came out this week. Odd.

10. The WSL Ran a Longboard Comp in the Kelly Pool

Ever wondered what a highly edited and produced World Surf League longboard pool comp would look and sound like? No? Well, here it is anyway!

And that was this week in surfing. Have a good weekend everyone.
