VB Slab of the Year Trip Experience Fiji the Tavarua Island Way

Friday 23rd March, 2012: BIG wave legend Ross Clarke-Jones and Gold Coasters Scott Wildin and John Cummings can’t wipe the smiles off their faces, with the VB Slab of the Year trip in full swing at the luxurious paradise of Tavarua Island in Fiji.

The trio have been lapping up the tropical island since Saturday, albeit, the moderate swell for the start of their trip before turning on today with incredible waves at Cloudbreak.

For Clarke-Jones, it's his first time to Tavarua Island.

"I can't believe I took so long to come here. It's even better than all the stories and what I imagined. A true paradise. Most accommodating and friendliest staff ever. Please let me come back!"

Wildin has also relished his time on the island, particulary after today's sublime conditions.

"I feel like a grom again. It's paradise. I'm speechless."

Tavarua Island General Manager Kaeo Dechape said the surfers are enjoying their time on the island.

"We are stoked to have Scott, John and Ross here on the island,” said Dechape.

“They are like grommets again. The surf has picked up today, so they are getting the full Tavarua experience. We hope to get them into all the waves surrounding the island as well as fishing, tennis and even a go on the ramp."

VB and Surfing Australia created the VB Slab of the Year competition for Australia's 2.5 million surfers and its rare breed of hardcore watermen. It was an online competition exclusive to www.surfingaustralia.com/vb/ which offered the chance for Australian surfers to win a weekly prize for the best tube or gnarliest wave surfed in Australian waters.

Wildin’s early morning, endless Kirra barrel in January, 2011 won him the VB Slab of the Year award - an all expenses paid surf trip for him and good mate John Cummings to the wave-rich Fiji island of Tavarua with Ross Clarke-Jones. Their trip will feature in Surfing World Magazine and on Television 4 via Surfing Australia TV.

Tavarua Island is only a short boat ride from Cloubreak – a powerful and challenging, world class wave.
