Fiji Wave-fest Ends On A High At Tavarua Island For VB Slab Of The Year Winner

Gold Coast lifeguard Scott Wildin is easing his way back into normal life after the “trip of a lifetime” to Tavarua Island Resort in Fiji as winner of the 2011 VB Slab of the Year competition.

Wildin won the trip for his endless Kirra barrel in January 2011 and took good mate John ‘Bear’ Cummings along and was joined by big-wave legend Ross Clarke-Jones for the weeklong wave-fest in the tropical island paradise.

The group sampled all the renowned breaks in the vicinity of Tavarua Island including Cloudbreak, Restaurants, Wilkes Right and Desperations.

“The trip was everything we expected and more,” Scott said. “We had really light winds and it was sunny every day with a few barrels.

“One day we scored five to six foot really nice barrels and there’d always be a cold beer waiting on the beach at the end of each day when we’d get back.

“It was great having Ross on the trip. It was the first time he’d been there and he was just like a grom. He was always the first off the boat and onto his board every day.”

Tavarua Island Resort General Manager Kaeo Dechape said the trip was a resounding success.

“The crew was epic,” he said. “So glad it all worked out for Scott, Bear and RCJ. Can't wait to see the footage and we're excited about next year. Pull in Australia!”

VB and Surfing Australia created the VB Slab of the Year competition for Australia's 2.5 million surfers and its rare breed of hardcore watermen. It was an online competition exclusive to www.surfingaustralia.com/vb/ which offered the chance for Australian surfers to win a weekly prize for the best tube or gnarliest wave surfed in Australian waters.

Wildin’s early morning, endless Kirra barrel in January, 2011 won him the VB Slab of the Year award - an all expenses paid surf trip for him and good mate John Cummings to the wave-rich Fiji island of Tavarua with Ross Clarke-Jones. Their trip will feature in Surfing World Magazine and on Television 4 via Surfing Australia TV.
