Rip Curl GromSearch Crowns NSW Champions In Great Waves At Cronulla

The Rip Curl GromSearch presented by Telstra was greeted with a solid swell and near perfect conditions for the final day of the opening event of the series. More than 150 competitors were reduced to the final four surfers in all divisions.

Top seed Kai Hing was a standout from the moment his quarter-final started, throwing down massive combinations of critical manoeuvres. The Sunshine Coast natural footer successfully took down Kalani Ball, Jacob Wilcox and local Cronulla surfer Jared Hickle to win the final of the under-16 boys. Kai said: “I’m so stoked. I haven’t won anything in ages, so it’s great to get a win under my belt, especially heading into the GromSearch at Jan Juc. It takes a lot of pressure off me. I couldn’t be happier.”

In the under-16 girls, Holly Wawn followed through from her win last week in the BL’s Blast Off and smashed the peaky waves with a series of critically-timed forehand blasts and carves. The Newport surfer finished the heat with a total of 15.73, leaving Laura Poncini in second, Bille Melinz in third and Cali McDonagh in fourth.

Harley Ross-Webster from North Curl Curl was victorious in the under-14 boys. Harley, a standout from round one, adapted to the tricky conditions throwing a series of well-executed snaps and powerful carves.

Sunshine Coast pro surfer Laura Poncini fought a close battle with Alysse Cooper in the final of the 14 girls, but it was Laura who was victorious by the time the final hooter sounded. The goofy-footer scored a heat total of 15.50 points for a series of nice forehand snaps and carves.

Mikey McDonagh was an early standout in the under-12s. In his quarter-final, the Lennox Head surfer threw down a solid display of powerful and stylish forehand snaps to score a 9.17 and combo his other opponents. He continued to gain momentum through the semis and into the final where he met a red-hot Keanu Miller. In the final, Mikey bashed out some lightening fast combinations and giant turns to take top spot.

Alyssa Lock scored one of the highest heat tallies of the girls’ divisions in the under-12s locking in a heat total of 17.16 points. Alyssa, struck early in the finals scoring a 9.73 in the first few minutes and then followed through with a 7.43 later in the heat. Macy Callaghan was her nearest rival scoring 11.56 points.

Kurtis Vaughn from Bateau Bay won the FIVE:AM Rising Star Award. Kurtis was awarded a Rip Curl wetsuit for his efforts.

Jared Hickel won the Telstra Performance award and scored a pair of Rip Curl sunglasses.

The Rip Curl Ultimate Standout Award was presented to Maroubra surfer Monty Tait. Monty scored a Rip Curl wetsuit and boardbag.

Keanu Miller won a Penny skateboard for the highest wave score of the event. Keanu scored a perfect 10.0 ride in one of his earlier heats.
