The Melbourne Wave Pool Is Back Open

Wave pools are re-opening, nature is healing

There hasn't been a lot of "re-opening" stories to highlight in surfing like the rest of Aus, for the most part our beaches remained open. So apart from the rule changes of out-of-towners being able to surf again, not a lot has changed for us as restrictions have been easing. But one place that did shut was Australia's only open-to-the-public wave pool, at Tullamarine in Melbourne. Still in their first few months of operation, the pool had to be closed, like every other public pool in the country, when COVID-19 lock downs took hold. As of today, though, they're back open.

It's not 100 per cent back to normal yet, though. There's additional hygiene and safety measures in accordance with Vic government guidelines, and no tag-along guests just coming to watch will be allowed.

They'll also be dropping two new types of sessions – one called the Cruiser, which is a laidback longboard style wave, and in bigger and better news, they've made a new variation of their "Beast Mode" barrelling little slab which they'll be capping surfer numbers for at 12, rather than the usual 18 (that session will also cost a bit extra, at $129, rather than $79 for the advanced session).
