Swell Update: This Is Just the First of Several Days of Heavy East Coast Surf

The broad Tasman low currently dominating our swell window began to drift slowly eastward on Wednesday – but don’t let that lull you into any sense of complacency. Today’s huge pulse of SSE swell is just the first of several days featuring large to heavy surf across the entire Eastern Seaboard.

Wednesday leading peak in mid-period SSE swell was generated by a 40 to 50 knot south to SE fetch wrapping around the storm’s south and southwestern quadrants. Although that’s set to ease a bit overnight there will still be no shortage of size and power, with a stronger SE bias in swell direction likely to translate into similarly large surf across semi-sheltered breaks throughout the day.

As mentioned in yesterday’s blog, the low’s longevity and slow eastward movement across the Tasman sets up a continuation of powerful surf, enduring throughout the weekend before finally settling down early next week. Already we’re seeing the early stages of a low-end gale force easterly fetch elongating across the south-eastern Tasman Sea, off New Zealand’s west coast.

This more distant fetch spans the storm’s southern flank for several days, giving rise to another powerful pulse of SE groundswell, arriving out of the 130 to 140 directional band on Friday. That promises another full day of powerful surf, arriving in the 6 to 10ft range depending on location – potentially maintaining still large 6 to 8ft sets at the more exposed spots as swell direction transitions more to the ESE on Saturday.
