Outrageous Nias, Rasta's Tripped Out Crop Circles Board, and Is Jackson Dorian the Wave Pool Prince?

COASTALWATCH | THIS WEEK IN SURFING
Ten Things from Surfing & the Internet on the Week That Was September 4 2020
1. A Ridiculous Nias Clip
You may have heard about a bunch of pro surfers who've found a loophole in the VISA system that's allowed them to do a boat trip to Indo and score pumping waves to themselves, well this isn't that. This is older footage that Nic Von Rupp is releasng just now in what is a quite spectacular edit. Clip of the week right here. And still the funniest intro sequence of all the surf YouTubers.
2. Jackons Dorian Hits the Palm Springs Pool
The chaos pool of California gets a visit from the pint-sized pool master Jackson Dorian and his friend, 12-year-old skate prodigy Sky Brown. And of course, they land the kinds of airs that were barely conceivable a decade ago. The way things are going, we can probably call Jackson the first surfer of the wave pool era.
3. Have You Watched the Bruce Brown Doco Yet?
Dana Brown, the son of surfing's most famous filmmaker, has made a move about his dad and it looks really good. We've got an interview with Dana about the film on Coastalwatch right here. The movie is available to rent and buy on Vimeo and Google Play and a few other places. I'm watching it this weekend for sure.
4. A Trippy Rasta and Gary McNeil Clip
Here's a ripping visit into surfboard shape psychedelica, with a crop circle influenced shaped twin-fin.
Here's a quote from Rasta about the thing:
"Ten years ago when wi-fi, clouds, and bluetooths technology obviously came from that year's tech heavy crop circle season, Gazza rightly figured if it's good enough for the world wide web then it's good enough for the bottom contours of a surfboard. The first one didn't work for me, but the bloke who got it surfed better than ever and is apparently now the real brains behind Space X, tesla tech and fully functioning slim fit night surf goggles. Apparently. Mostly good stuff there."
I have no idea what that means.
5. Italo Is Good
To paraphrase Bruce Brown, if you could harness the energy from one Italo Ferreira YouTube clip, you could power a city... for a year.
6. Clint Kimmins Jumps on Jamie Mitchell's Podcast
Cint's story is pretty unique in the surf world. After a promising surf career as a grom, he served six months of jail-time after being accused of unlawful wounding, following a brawl at Tugun Surf Club. His time in jail set him on a path of fitness, triathlons and big wave surfing. He tells his whole story on Jamie's podcast below.
7. No Small Feat, Ep 2
Speaking of big wave surfing, episode two of Red Bull's new series No Small Feat is here. It's an all-female big wave series following Emi Erickson and Izzi Gomez in the days leading to the 2019 Jaws contest. In ep 2, the comp gets the green light and Emi n Izzi go through their prep.
8. Your Weekly Dose of Mase
Our guy Mason Ho heads to California to surf some wonky wdges with typical aplomb and fervour. My favourite moment is old mate's front flip last second bail at 2.30. He then heads to Hawaii to surf some real summer slop, and perhaps the most ridiculous keyhole, rockwave thing yet. Not for a second does it look fun.
9. Pacha Light Visits Home In Ecuador
Gold Coast QS surfer Pacha Light actually grew up in Ecuador. In this Billabong Women's clip series, Home, she heads back to the South American country to show us what it's like, and surf some pretty dreamy and relatively empty righthanders.
10. Get to This Art Show if You Can
Sydney shredder and artist Billy Bain has an art show coming up this month (Sep 17 to Oct 4) in Darlinghurst. His sculpture set, called Blokes, explores the mythology of Aussie masculinity... also they're just really bloody cool. Find more info about the show here.
And that was this week in surfing. Have a good weekend everyone. Hang in there, Vicco.
