Bali.

Bali went from glorious to abysmal all in one week. The much-hyped swells forecast to hit Bali last week were very disappointing to say the least. Rain and funky winds made for lumpy and dirty waves at most breaks. The outer reefs weren’t much better to surf, but at least had clean water. Indo Rusty boss/tube meister Kane Faint reported “I surfed Ulu this morning and it was quite possibly the worst waves I have ever seen out there 3-4ft but soft, lumpy, junky, like ugly wind swell, the rights were the best waves out there!” That pretty much summed up the week here in Bali.

North Sumatra.

A textbook week in North Sumatra. Clear sunny days, plenty of overhead surf and those much sought after light and variable winds. Each day has been a bit of a carbon copy of the previous one this week, and all that changed really was the wave heights. The start of the reporting period was larger but as i send out this report on Sunday night May 30 the swell is rising. Weeks like the one just passed are the reason Aussies choose Indonesia above just about any other surf destination on their winter breaks. There are big things predicted for the coming week so make sure you keep an eye on Ben Macartney’s Indo Swell Forecast posted in the Indo section every Thursday. - Shane Peel
