Review – Quota by Jock Serong

It’s about those little moments. Those little moments from a particularly good piece of Australian film, tv, album or book that make you stop and go, “Yes! That’s what I love about Australia.” And not in a nationalistic, chant at the cricket kind of way, just the subtle observations and use of Australian language that make you love and appreciate the beauty of Aussie story-telling. Jock Serong’s debut novel, Quota, is overflowing with those little moments.

The story follows Charlie Jardim, a Melbourne lawyer disgraced after verbally unleashing on a heartless magistrate, as he gets thrown the lifeline of a job that takes him to a remote coastal Victorian town. His task is to convince a young local fisherman to change his testimonial about the murder of his brother in the illegal abalone poaching trade.

The narrative is arresting and has the rhythm of a classic crime/legal thriller, but it’s the colour in the detail that makes this a beautiful reading experience – the coastal characters and their language, the settings of the local coastal town haunts of the footy ground, the beach or the pub. You can almost taste the cold salty air as you read. We’ve long enjoyed the brilliant romanticism and enthusiasm of Jock Serong’s writing about surfing and Australiana in Surfing World, now we adore his prose in the form of fiction. If the very best episodes of Sea-Change met the best elements of a John Grisham novel, well… – MJ
