“German Bank off Long Reef has been off the hook with Tom Carroll, The Captain, Ollie and Cage Fighter Rob Hill. Thirty foot faces of fun. Last weekend and Tuesday morning were best when the wind was offshore. The rest of the week was too windy for the bombies.” – Matty Grainger.

Meanwhile on the Southside Hawaiian legends Makua Rothman and Sunny Garcia have been sampling some southern Sydney cylinders at Cape Solander, Shark Island and Cronulla Point.

Makua surfed “Middles” with Koby, and Sunny has been surfing Shark Island and Cronulla Point with fellow Carve team rider Trent Munro while staying in The Nulla.

This week’s solid run of South swell combined with cooler WSW and southerly winds has been the first real run of extended swell in Sydney and surrounds this calendar year and Benny Mac’s forecasts are talking up the prospect of more swell next week. Hallelujah!

Finally some winter consistency at last!

Hey, but hell hasn’t it been a long wait?

Fact is Autumn 2013 was well below par in Sydney and surrounds. Sure there were a handful of standout days, but not the usual weeks of extended swell that we often enjoy in Sydney during a standard April/May.

Autumn 2013 was the equal-third-warmest Autumn for mean maximum temperatures, and had the fewest cold days on record. It was a season of contrasts with the most heavy rain days since 2003; yet we also endured the driest Autumn spell on record with well above average sunshine, few cloudy days.

An East Coast Low produced 64.8 mm between 2am and 2pm on April 20 and a 3-day total of 77.8 mm to 9am on May 25 which coincided with the two best swells of the season.

Autumn also featured several dry, clear spells. Notably, only 0.2 mm of rain was recorded in the four weeks between 24 April and 22 May. This is the driest such period on record for autumn.

Only six days had maximum temperatures below 20 °C during Autumn, the fewest cold days on record.

Yes, so three weeks into June it finally looks and feels like it really is Winter. Wave heights are still up around the three to five foot range across Sydney and surrounds most exposed coasts as I type this on Thursday morning June 20.

Down the coast the staple southern protected reefs and points have awoken from slumber and in Sydney and surrounds the southern Sydney reefs, Nth Steyne and Dee Why Point have been the busiest/most protected.

Now that we have turned the corner and with that slow moving Low pressure system meandering across the southern Tasman and potentially redeveloping over New Zealand during the next few days, hopefully we are in for plenty more happy Winter days.
