Ten Things Surfing Gave The Internet This Week

It's been a sad last couple of days... Surfing as a sport, or form of subculture, is terribly young. It's so young that very few of the men and women who have formed our identity as a community and made great advancements in surfing exploration, performance and innovation, have left us. So when someone like Al Byrne, one of the greatest shapers and surfers in our history and a prominent figure in our community, passes in the tragic circumstances of a motorcycle accident, it reverberates through surfing tenfold. It creates a moment for us to stop and reflect on all the amazing characters we have in surfing, the great things they've done and how lucky we are to share waves with them in line-ups all over Australia and beyond, every day.

Surfing tragicly lost one of its legends this week. Al Byrne.

Surfing tragicly lost one of its legends this week. Al Byrne.

1. Al Byrne Passed Away

No doubt the biggest story of the week was the sad news of Al Byrne's passing after suffering a motorcycle accident in Bali in the early hours of Saturday morning. Vale AL BYrne. Here is a small gallery of photos from Al in the 1980s.

2. Slow Dance Is Out

The highly anticipated Craig Anderson flick, Slow Dance directed by Dane Reynolds, is finally here. Premiering online for 24 hours before going to iTunes, the 35 minute film is a sort of tribute to home movies made by parents in the early 90s (Craig's of which have lovingly been included). Gracefiul airs, single fins at Chopes and long long long long long long barrels at Skeleton Bay abound in the flick that stars Craig (duh), Chippa Wilson, Rob Machado, Dane Reynolds, Occy, Hoyo and Ozzie Wright. We could review it further, but we think Sterling Spencer has achieved the best commentary on the release thus far.

"he seems like a sweetheart....is he?"

3. Teahupoo Starts Next Week

YES! The longest break in the World Tour's year is nearly over, and then the Billabong Pro Tahiti will begin. Here are some of Billabong's lead up clips for the event. Very very good. John John, who is always brilliant. And a How-Not-To-Surf-Teahupoo clip, which could never not be brilliant. Brilliant.

4. Kerrsy's Lay Days At Bells

Oh yeah, we love Kerrsy. We've said it before. He's the man. This is a nice candid behind the scenes style vid, and while it lingers on the table tennis for way too long, it's an enjoyable watch indeed.

5. Fish At The Open

Good-time-happy-party-guy Paul Fisher takes the Coachella viral video (where interviewers asked unsuspecting festival goers about bands that didn't exist) and applies it to the US Open – hilarity ensues.

6. Glazzers Real Horror Show Trailer

Local longboard movie by Gatoi and Wild Things. Bottom turn at 1.14 ftw.

7. Metal Neck

Andrew Doheny and gang, including their mate who goes by the name Metal Jimmy, released their late 80s Americana inspired surf flick, Metal Neck. Let the good times roll man. Note: Contains plenty of swearing and other things not ok for small children or quiet workplaces. Watch it here.

8. Kai Otton, Bring It Home

Otts. Surfing. In. Sydney. Yeah Otts! If Kai Otton comes home from Teahupoo with the trophy I'll spend all day high-fiving strangers on Manly Corso. People will think I'm weird, they might even leave me hanging. But it won't matter, they can leave me hanging all they want, I'll just turn my open palm into a fist, and fist-pump my little heart away. You're in my Fanstasy team Otts, let's do this.

9. Al Knost California Summer Series

Watch this, dream of Summer. It's coming you know. Summer. What are you going to do? We're going to hang out by the beach all day. Drink (Ribena) responsibly in the sun and sand and then go home and get sand and salt and crud everywhere. In the doona, in the couch cushions... It's going to be the best.

10. 21 Days – Jordy and CJ

Red Bull continue their most excellent web series, this time with CJ Hobgood and Jordy Smith in the lead up to the Billabong Pro Tahit. Shout out to Rizzle-Dizzle Blakeway at 14.45.

Bonus…

Anastasia Ashley wins all the internet. Two million views in two days of her warm up "routine" at the Supergirl Pro. Malia Manuel won the event (Ashley bowed out in the round of 72), and the highlights video of the surfing is currently sitting at 334 views...

And that was this week in surfing. Have a good weekend. CW out.
