Ten Things From Surfing & The Internet On The Week That Was November 3, 2017

1. Laurie Towner's New Clip Is An Introspective Cracker

Making the rounds in Internet surf world this week has been this 11 minute Laurie Towner clip. Part surf clip, part talking head rumination on post sponsorship pro surfer life, it an interesting first person take on Laurie Towner’s career. A career that for the most part was successful, but will forever seem unlucky to have not born more fruit… a victim of the era, in some respects. What’s lovely about this how content Laurie is with his surfing, and his life, at this point. It's almost as if you're sitting down with him for a cup of tea.

“I just want to be remembered as someone who rode some really cool waves, and, I’ll be happy. And I feel pretty happy, that’s who I am.” Simple, brilliant.

2. The Peahi Challenge Happened

The jewel in the crown of the WSL Big Wave World Tour, the Pe’ahi Challenge went down in gigantic, pumping conditions last weekend. If you were lucky, you sat down on the couch with some snacks and hot cup of tea and took it in live. Because an event like that is much more fascinating as a live spectacle than can ever be translated in a YouTube package. The highlight of the full event is without a doubt the ten point tube ride that eventual winner Ian Walsh scored in the final. Some are calling it the greatest tube ever ridden in a competition. Paige Alms went back to back on the women’s side of the event. Does that make her the greatest female big wave surfer of all time? Probably. The other highlight to come out of the event is the Go-Pro footage of finalist Kai Lenny. He released it all on this clip minutes before publishing and it's quite enthralling.

3. 28 Seconds of Ryan Callinan

Billabong is eeking out all their summer board short marketing  as we head into the water months, and that’s fine so long as we get 30 seconds of fresh Ryan Callinan footage ripping the bag out of some place that’s warmer than Canada right now, where it's best to be drinking a hot cup of tea at all times so you can stay warm. Callinan is pretty far back in the QS rankings this year (37th) and would need two crazy-good results in Hawaii if he were to qualify for 2018, but Callinan is a crazy-good surfer. So let’s go R-Cal!

4. Did You See The Clubbie Take On Shippies?

Matt Bevilacqua is an Australian IronMan competitor and two time world paddleboat champion originally from Tassie. So why is he here, why is he here in this weekly round up of surfing things? Well, because he freaking took his clubbie racing board and had a crack at paddling it into a wave at Shipsterns! What the shit?! This is equally entertaining for people who don’t mind clubbies – to see them try and tackle an iconic Australian slab on a racing board – and people who hate clubbies – to see them eat shit at that very same spot. Mad respect to the guy for paddling out there and having a go.

The gold is in the Instagram, but the full clip of the action is in the YouTube starting at around 2.10 mark, while the carnage gets in there around 6.40. Pour yourself a cup of tea and give it a gander!

5. The Dooley: Scary Good Episode

Did you know about Scary Good? It’s a surf movie that Surfing World Magazine made and that Beach Grit called the best movie of the year and that I am calling better than Moonlight, Lala Land and Citizen Kane combined. And in celebration of that, Danny Johnson and I dedicated the entire last episode of our stupid podcast to the movie. It was fun.

6. Carissa Moore Went To Fiji

Carissa Moore had the worst year she’s had on the CT in about half a decade. Despite that, she’s still in contention for the World Title. We’ll find out that destiny at Honolulu Bay at the end of November. Until then, let’s watch one of the greatest surfers of all time score pumping Restaurants on a recent strike mission to Fiji in this delightfully soundtracked clip. This is the best clip of the week, probably. What kind of tea do you think they serve in the restaurant on Tavarua you think? Standard black? Or would they have an array of herbal numbers?

7. The WSL Picked Their Dude

The WSL’s kinda-sorta-hard-to-understand-what-it-is campaign to award some stoked out surf fan with six weeks in Hawaii has gone to Zach Brown, a former airline employee and current dental school student from Tennessee. “Whether I get the position or not, I'm too obsessed with filmmaking, photography, travel, surf, and the world of adventure to ever give up the dream," is what Zach said in his application for the role. Yuk. But congratulations all the same. Not in a million years of staring into tea leaves do you start to believe you'll win a competition like this, so it must be quite a thrill.

8. The Most Fun Surf Movie This Week

Jack Coleman, the legend behind modern counter cultural surf classics like Groove Move, Polyester, and Imaginary Carpet Market, has put together this clip for the Seppo Mollusk Surf Shop. And it’s a pretty neat time. It follows two Southern Californian logging brothers, Tanner and Levi Prairie, that surf sick and are pretty funny, invoking the spirit of Bruce Brown with their American brand of larrikinism. Good. I give  it seven out of seven cups of tea.

9. Here Is Kolohe Doing Airs In France

You know what’s great about this clip? No, it’s not the very good aerial surfing, or the cool new wave soundtrack. It’s not even Kolohe’s fetching wetsuit. No, it’s the clip’s length. 45 seconds. I wish everything was 45 seconds. Especially surf clips. But especially the amount of time it takes for a cup of tea to cool down before it's safe to sip.

10. And here is Gabby, Italo, and Jadson doing airs in Portugal

This clip is great and all, what with Gabriel Medina and Italo Ferreira launching all over your face throughout Portugal while some dark heavy glammy feeling metal plays over it. Plus, Jadson Andre is in it. And anything with Jadson Andre in it is awesome, even if it’s a heat with Nat Young. But imagine if this clip went the Kolohe route above and was only 45 seconds long. Imagine how many cups of tea you could make in that time! What a missed opportunity.

This Week In Not Surfing

The new segment where I send you a piece of Internet content to soothe your way into the weekend. Why not run a bath, light some candles, and hit play on this neverending video of a poor kid on roller blades struggling to get out of a skate bowl. The poor kid. P.S. Peppermint tea.

And that was this week in surfing. Have a good weekened everyone. Love, Mike.
