Ten Things From Surfing & The Internet On The Week That Was November 10, 2017

1. Candle by Noa Deane

How often does a clip like this come around? Twice, three times a year? Noa Deane might be the best freesurfer in the world right now. He's certainly a part of the conversation, which would include Dane Reynolds and Mikey Wright, and when any one of those guys drops a clip, you drop everything and watch it once, twice, three times. Especially when it opens with a song by legendary Australian punk icon, The Saints, has backside indie grabs, wild large aerial rotations, solid barrels, powerful carves, and finishes with Noa doing finger flips with Ozzie Wright at Collaroy.

Candle, starring Noa Deane and directed by Mikey Mallalieu, is an instant nomination for the best web clip of 2017.

2. Yadin Nicol – Vague + Profound

Speaking of best clips of the year, where did this come from? Yadin Nicol, with some help from Dillon Perillo and Damien Hobgood has just dropped one of the best clips you've seen since, well, Noa's just above. It looks and feels like a Dion Agius edit circa 2012, but with a 2017 level of performance. Apparently this clip is compiled from footage spanning a couple of years. It’s extraordinary to think they had these bangers filed away, and patiently sat on them for all that time. And it’s extraordinary that in the fast paced progression of modern surfing they’re not just relevant, they’re excellent. It’s a very good clip, putting two minutes of credits on a ten minute film is a bit much though, no?

3. Rasta On The Occ-Cast

It’s surfing’s no.1 podcast/YouTube show, the Occ-Cast! And in what has to be an instant top five episode of the series is this David Rastovich interview. Sometimes Rasta can be a little pigeonholed as a spiritual free-living hippy, due to his role as surfing’s best go-to spokesmen on all issues environmental, but Rasta is also a really funny, down to earth guy that doesn’t take himself too seriously, and that’s why this episode is such a ripper. One of the most eloquent speakers in surfing, easy. Give it a whirl next time you’re making dinner. It’ll be 45 minutes well spent. And you'll have a delicious lasagna to eat at the end of it. Yum.

4. Youngest CT Competitor Ever

What were you doing when you were 15? Smoking cigarettes behind the bike shed? Reading Lord of The Rings? Bet you weren’t qualifying for Championship Tour, unless your name is Caroline Marks, that is. She’s the Floridian turned Trestles local that just became the youngest surfer to ever qualify for the Championship Tour at just 15. And two nights ago that news was featured on ESPN’s Sportcenter nightly top ten. And get this, she’s already won the 2018 Rookie of the Year. In record time, without even surfing an event, the award is hers. That’s how freaking good she is. (She’ll be the only rookie on tour next year).

So Stoked to make it on ESPN top ten last night! Thanks @sportscenter! Footage: @tylerbll

5. Jackson Dorian At The Wave Pool

Jackson Dorian is Shane Dorian’s son. One of the benefits of being Shane Dorian’s son, other than getting to hang out with Shane Dorian a lot, is that you get Kelly Slater as a godfather. And one of the benefits of getting Kelly Slater as a godfather is that you get to surf his super magical mystery wave pool while it’s nearly double overhead. Jackson rips (the turn he does at 0.33 is no joke), and the wave pool has never looked better. He also just looks like a pretty funny, happy kid.

6. The Dooley: Should Rasta Have Been a Cocktail Bartender Instead of pro Freesurfer?

Which WSL commentator has won the Hawaiian Triple Crown? How many wave pool companies are too many? Plus hugs, haircuts, what would you name your wave pool, and so many other things on my stupid weekly surf podcast I do with the Week Wrap guy, The Dooley!

7. Jay Davies and Lee Wilson Meet a Nias Wedge

Jay Davies is always a joy to watch. His power, his approach, it never disappoints. Novelty wedges are also always a joy to watch. Makes sense that this clip of Jay Davies hucking himself into oblivion at a wedge in Nias with Lee Wilson for their board sponsor, Chilli, is a good one then. There’s plenty of other good surfing too, but it’s the wedge launches we’ll remember.

8. The Best Foil Boarding Ever?

“Foiling is one of those things that’s pretty easy to hate on if you’ve never tried it.” Guilty! From Kai Lenny (the current Big Wave World Tour No.1)’s new documentary Paradigm Lost comes this five minute foil boarding segment featuring the likes of John John Florence, Jamie O’Brien, Julian Wilson, Kelly Slater, Ian Walsh and Greg Long trying out the experimental form of wave/swell riding. And the result is probably the best, most interesting foil boarding footage you’ve ever seen. Please don’t hurt me Laird!

9. Slater In Joyzey

New Jersey gets waves. But it doesn’t often get waves this good, nor when the greatest surfer of all time is in town. Here, from a session at the end of October, are a crew of locals picking the gold out of the brown barrels, including Balaram Stack from across state lines, and of course, Kelly Slater. Shoutout to the guy at the end getting the shot with his iPad. Very handy.

10. And here is a very good air by Julian Wilson

Julian Wilson is good at aerials. Yep. Here he is, the World No.4, doing Chippa Wilson as good as Chippa Wilson does Chippa Wilson.

This Week In Not Surfing

Have you watched Stranger Things yet? The second season? It's not nearly as good as the first but it is still a lot of fun, and the soundtrack is very good. As Ryan Callinan here knows in this very good Instagram shot he posted. Ryan Callinan is still using CDs, though, is the big takeaway from here. Good onya, R-Cal. Ya legend.

And that was this week in surfing. Have a good weekend everyone.
