Ten Things From Surfing & The Internet On The Week That Was February 16, 2018

1. Tom Curren Gets On Occy's Occ-Cast

Without a doubt the most interesting surfing thing to hit the internet this week was the Tom Curren appearing on the Occ-Cast and going roller-skating together. ROLLER-SKATING! Also, that very first cut of them appearing on Australian television together which also featured in Jack McCoy's Occumentary, is one of my favourite little clips in surfing history. So funny.

2. Torren Martyn On a 5'4" Twin-Fin MOTE Board

Gee those Simon Jones Morning of the Earth boards look nice. Torren Martyn is one of surfing's most stylish boardriders at the moment, and he furthers his reputation as that in this four minute clip out of Indo for Need Essentials. Very nice. 


3. Wade Goodall's Floater To Chop Hop

I'm pretty sure I saw Creed McTaggart do one of these last year. Did I? Or am I making that up? Either way, how much do we all love Wade Goodall? So much. Heaps much! And this week filmer Harry Triglone dropped this nifty little clip of him on Instagram and everyone is pretty stoked on it.

4. The Excellent Adventures of Andrew Mooney's Outback Comeback

As far as titles go, this is the clip of the year: The Excellent Adventures of Andrew Mooney's Outback Comeback? Sign me up! Filmmaker Owen Milne has paired up with humble hard charger (and hilarious dude) Andrew Mooney as he made his comeback from injury to put together this most excellent mini-biopic full of some pretty serious Aus desert tubes.

5. Looking Back To The Best Manly Event Ever

As we start gearing up for the 2018 Vissla Sydney Surf Pro (the event that'll be on in place of the Aus Open of Surf), a host of Australian surf icons remember the 1978 Surfabout where Wayne Lynch and Larry Blair went to head to head in epic Manly tubes.

6. Kai Neville Released A Full Length Movie

The no.1 surf filmmaker of the era made a movie called Listen Now Misty Dawn late last year for his sunglasses company, Epokhe. It stars Dion Agius, Creed McTaggart, Jack Freestone, Mitch Coleborn, Nate Tyler, Brendon Gibbens, Shaun Manners and Chippa Wilson, but most excitingly it introduces now full time freesurfer Taj Burrow to the team with a four minute section at the beginning of the movie. Heaven.

7. Nazare Happened

The WSL's Big Wave World Tour event at Nazare, Portugal took place this week. It was won by Brazillian Lucas Chianca. And that, dear friends, is every single detail I know about the 2017 Nazare Challenge.

8. Otis Carey and Coffs Harbour

This here is a wonderful little doco of the Billabong team visiting Coffs Harbour and their local team surfer Otis Carey taking us through the Big Banana town for his art show. Bloody good onya, Otis, ya legend.

9. Story Time With Dave Wassel

North Shore lifeguard, sometime commentator extraordinaire and big wave charger Mr. Dave Wassel hikes us up the hills above Pipeline and points out where the reefs end. Have you ever seen it explained from that angle? Interesting stuff.

10. Jesse Mendes Is A Surfer We'll Be Seeing More Of

So let's get to know the guy a iittle. Every year one of your favourite surfers gets beaten by a CT rookie, leaving you scratching your head and asking, "Who?" Not this year. This year we'll have watched this clip and going, "Arrrhggh, Jesse Mendes? Not Jesse Mendes!" Or something like that.

Close your eyes and take yourself back to March, 2010. Jordy Smith and Dane Reynolds had just finished 11th and 10th on the CT the year before, and were about to head into both of their most successful competitive years ever. Modern Collective had just come out. And no-one had heard of the WSL yet. It was an exciting time. So exciting that Jordy for some kind of Red Bull campaign was teamed up with surf loving South African musicians, Goldfish to record a track called "Flying Stealth" under the name Project Goldsmith. It's the best!

Check out Summer Bright's Lager's Summer Sessions Music Tour this summer where unfortunately Jordy Smith won't be playing, but Alex Lahey will.
