Ten Things from Surfing & the Internet on the Week That Was January 3, 2020

1. The South Coast of NSW and Far East Coast of Vic Have Been Burning

As you no doubt know, Australia is in the midst of a bushfire crisis that is affecting some premier regions of Australian surfing coasts (as well as many other regions).

I happened to be camping at a caravan park 5 minutes south of Narooma – a completely safe zone – but I'll never forget how the sun just didn't seem to come up on the morning of New Year's Eve, how black, and then red, the skies were at 10am, and the feeling of helplessness as we were left without power, phone reception or petrol while we got evacuated to sleep on the Narooma Golf Course. I can't even imagine how it must have felt to face these factors while also having a home under threat.

I don't have anything to add other than that we're thinking of the people of those coastal communities and would like to encourage everyone to donate, if they can, to the following organisations:

Australian Red Cross

The NSW Rural Fire Service

The CFA

2. WSL Released A Behind the Scenes Doc on Medina's Portugal Melt

Remember when Gabriel Medina destroyed his own chances of winning his third World Title with his priority blunder in Portugal? Well, the WSL's fly on the wall series Mic'd Up was following Gabby for said event and it's pretty bloody good viewing. You have to watch it on the WSL site over here. The below clip is some new content the WSL is rolling out, that, unrelated, explains how paddle battles work.

3. John John Surfs Sick North Shore Sand Banks

Thick powerful beachies that look fun as hell, while brother Nate Florence narrates and explains the session, this clip is a good time. Let's hope all of 2020 is a good time for John.

4. Hurley Cut Rob Machado

The style icon, Momentum Alumni and "Drifter" has been with Hurley for almost two decades, but this week let the world know on his Instagram that his relationship with the big surf brand was over. Here's what he wrote:

"All good things must come to an end.
Almost 20 years ago Bob Hurley looked me in the eye and told me to β€œgo surfing”. He could see my frustrations with contest surfing and knew that I would be better off just surfing and being me. Thank you Bob for the years of encouragement, motivation, inspiration, enjoyment... the list goes on and on.
It truly has been an honor to work for the brand for such a long period of my life. I want to thank everyone that I have ever crossed paths with at the Hurley brand for collaborating in so many ways to bring the joy of surfing to so many all over the world.
And I Especially want to thank the Hurley family for always making me feel the importance of family and always welcoming me and my family into your hearts.
Bob. I am forever grateful for our friendship"

Hurley was bought by BlueStar Alliance, which is some big American corpo, last year – and the vibe in the water is that this won't be the last surfer to not be offered a new contract when their current one dries up. John John, Carissa, Julian, Filipe Toledo, Ace etc., could be shopping for new stickers soon.

Here's the last ever Machado Hurley ad:

5. Epic 17 Minute HaydenShapes Movie Starring Craig and More

A week before Chrissie the Aussie surfboard brand behind the last decade's most popular surfboard (I reckon) dropped this rad boat trip movie starring its team of stylish freesurfers. Craig Anderson is there of course, and alongside him is Dylan Graves, grommie Oscar Langburne and more. Never thought I'd see Elliott Smith's "Everything Means Nothing To Me" soundtrack surfing, and boy am I here for it.

6. The Fight For the Bight Goes On

Just before Christmas, Equinor was given the go-ahead to exploratory drill the Great Australian Bight, but that doesn't mean the fight is over – as evidenced by this little doco released this week featuring Maurice and Damien Cole.

7. Tudor and Son

Iconoclast Joel Tudor took his son Tosh, with Alex Knost, to the North Shore of Oahu and they drew some seriously sick lines. Style for days in this clip they've called Headed West.

8. Mason Ho's 2019 Highlight Reel

30 minutes of gold from the most entertaining surfer in the world, Mr. Mason Ho.

9. Rusty Bierke's Journey At Jaws

The O'Neill team give us a behind the scenes look at the big Jaws comp that went down in December, including of course, one of our favourites in Aussie NSW South Coast charger Russell Bierke.

10. Oh Canada

Pete Devries, Noa Cohen and a couple of other Canucks score cold waves at a pretty epic looking right on Canada's west coast. From a session some time in 2019.

And that was this week in surfing. Have a good weekend everyone. Stay safe.
