Ten Things from Surfing & the Internet on the Week That Was April 24 2020

1. Your Weekly COVID-19 Surfing Related Update – Pipe Was Quite Good

Hey guys, I don't know why I've lead number one off with the above subhead... there's not really much to report and I've started losing my mind a little bit thinking about it constantly for the last six weeks. You can still surf, beaches that were closed for general exercise are opening again, you still shouldn't be travelling to go surfing, nothing is happening with the WSL and blah blah blah, corona corona corona.

Nick Carroll has continued his excellent reporting with this story about Indonesian surf travel and its future in this uncertain time, though, and that's well worth a big ol' read.

One exciting thing about the pandemic surf world is that the waves just keep on breaking, and YouTube surf vloggers just keep on YouTube surf vlogging. Case in point here, Pipe was absolutely firing the other week and Koa Rothman was there to surf and vlog it.

Writes Koa: "I’m going to go ahead and say this was some of the best Pipeline I’ve seen in my life!"

Epic. Koa also surfed it without a leggie. I don't know why he's making such a big deal of surfing without one, dudes at the Pass do that all the time. I also surf without a leggie all the time too, not by choice though... just 'cause Vaughan Blakey stole mine when he came to Melbourne to surf the wave pool and I can't afford a new one. But, gee, what I'd do to go surfing with Vaughan and have him steal my leggie again. What a dream that'd be.

The best Pipe of Koa Rothman's life starts right on the 5 minute mark:

2. Julian Wilson's New Old Clip

Julian Wilson's YouTube channel is kind of funny because he just drops clips willy nilly with zero information on them, and to work out what they are and when they're from you have to walk around the internet for a little bit and find the details elsewehere. This clip is from a Hurley campaign in 2013. Julian's ripping Western Australia and eating avocado toast. God I could go some avocado toast right now. Can't be stuffed going to the shops and risking my life to get avos right now though. Plus, the only avocados going at the moment are those shepard ones, and I'm not sure why, but they really feel like an off-brand version of the food.. They're kinda the (redacted) of the avocado world, aren't they?

3. Red Bull's Gold Coast Swell Clip

Do you ever think about how gross Red Bull is? Not as a company, the company does cool shit all the time; puts money into surfing, creates really great documentary series and things of that nature, that stuff's cool. But the drink itself... isn't it weird how gross that drink is? It tastes kind of like if the world's best scientists spent billions on making petrol not poisonous and kinda sweet. I haven't drank it in years, but gee back in the Surfing World Magazine deadline days I used to stay up all night and smash the crap out of that stuff. It's strange how completely unrelated that product is to the act of surfing and how much of a big player it is in our sport and culture. Anyway, here's that drink's recap of the epic Gold Coast swell from the other week. Like everything Red Bull make (except the drink itself, of course), it's very very good.

4. John John's Sailing/Nature Series

When I grow up, I'm going to be a 27-year-old former child surfing prodigy turned two time World Champion that's has an obtuse relationship with modern disposable surf content and media, but will then begin to engage with creating that kind of content when I have to walk away from the record-breaking, multi-millon dollar contract I had with my major sponsor. Here's the thing though, the content I make will be a sailing/nature series. It's going to be the best time, I can't wait.

5. Rage 3's Indo Leftovers

The best surf video of the year is Rage 3. Here are some cutting room floor clips of Creed McTaggart, Noa Deane, Beau Foster, Jaleesa Vincent, Shaun Manners, Ellis Ericson and a cameo from one of the absolute best blokes in surfing – Toby Cregan. What a lord that guy is.

6. Mini Occ-Cast With Jaleesa Vincent

Speaking of Jaleesa Vincent, who stars in the above clip, here she is in an iso interview with Occy.

7. Tyler Wright's Exercise Tips

Our two time World Champ is a freaking beast who had she not suffered a debilitating illness last season, could well be a three-time World Champ. As part of Rip Curl's Tyler week, she's showing us how to also be a beast.

8. Courage To Change – A Mental Health Story

Now for a change of pace, here's a video on Vicco surfer Carlo Lowdon opening up about mental health challenges. Carlo's story isn't an uncommon one amongst us surfers, but it's rare we see it spoken on with such brutal honesty and it's a great reminder that there's nothing wrong or abnormal about reaching out for some help.

(If you or anyone you know needs help, please contact Lifeline on 13 11 14 or Headspace on 1800 650 890.)

9. The Coffin Brothers' Hawaii Highlights

Eleven minutes of fast paced North Shore action from Parker and Conner, and they're ripping. How do you feel about comp footage in surf clips? How do you feel about butt shots in 2020? I'm yeah, and no.

10. Oscar Langburne Likes Music and Surfing

Stylish Central Coast teen Oscar Langburne surfing like Craig Anderson on big long lefts to an all-time Arcade Fire track. You better believe I dig this clip. I dig it almost as much as a lot of dads will hate it. Almost.

And that was this week in surfing. Stay safe and have a good weekend everyone.
