A+ Waves Continue In The Maldives

Report & photos by Richard Kotch for World Surfaris

In this line of work, it’s not a very good idea to make too many promises or guarantees regarding waves or weather, but April is a month that always seems to deliver in the Maldives.

This April we have had 2-4ft waves, offshore winds (or sheet glass conditions) and beautiful weather every single day for the first three weeks. I admit that a surf report would make far more interesting reading if there were more highs and lows to report on, but if you are on a week long surf trip that was booked months in advance, the guarantee of super consistent perfect mid sized waves is hard to pass up and quite reassuring when booking plane tickets. The only deviation from this Zen-like middle path of predictable perfection was the swell dropping off to glassy 1-3ft for four days on the 24th before picking right back up to glassy perfect 4-6ft on the 28th.

This late April swell was the best of the season so far and it lit up every wave in the North male region with A+ conditions. On a side note, it almost went without a mention in this report which was initially requested, and started, on the 21st.

It’s now the 2nd May and I am looking out at perfect 4-5ft Lohis as I write. The swell dropped off slightly but the conditions have been flawless beyond words. I finished my last report (BOAT TRIPPING IN THE SOUTHERN ATOLLS) by stating that when a season starts this well we can expect a very good year, and April has just solidified this expectation! See you soon!
