If you've been following Mick Fanning, Joel Parkinson or Kelly Slater on social media, it'll come as no surprise that the three world champions – plus Dane Reynolds, Bruno Santos and Shane Dorian – recently hit Fiji to score a swell at Cloudbreak.

But wait? Mick and Kelly on surfari together while the World Title showdown looms... How?

Coincidence, if you would believe it. Fanning, Parko and friends stayed on Namotu, sneaking in a last minute shoot for the soon to drop Taylor Steele film Missing. While Kelly stayed at Tavarua enjoying a lil' holiday at one of his favourite places on the planet.

"I was actually in a boat full of spectators, guests staying at Namotu," says photographer Murray Fraser, of the moment the contenders both hit the line-up. "Everyone knew Kelly was around but he wasn't in the line-up, then about half an hour into the session a jet ski appears bouncing through the chop in the channel.  Heads turned, whispers started, 'Is that Kelly?' 'Look it's Slater!' He cruised the line-up for a bit, spotted Mick in the longboat and went over to him for a quick hello. It didn't look like they said too much, couple of eye contacts, friendly pleasantries and off Kelly sped."

Was there weird World Title vibe?

"Nothing I picked up on. More a friendly hand slap, and then off to get tubed with friends."

Forecaster's Note:
The long interval SSW groundswell that lit up Fiji’s Cloudbreak this week was the by produce of a deep Southern Ocean low that migrated slowly below Tasmania last Friday 25 and Saturday 26 October. The low supported a broad belt of WSW gales across Fiji’s swell window – the first such storm system to impact the region for some time. – BM
