NSW SWELL ANALYSIS
WAVES: 5-8ft SSE @ 13seconds
WIND: Up to 14kn W-NNW-NW
WATER TEMP: 19-20degrees
AIR TEMP: 18-19degrees
For anyone not at Splendour In The Grass, the NSW coastline put on a spectacular splendour of its own all thanks to a mid-period SE groundswell that generated large, clean surf today peaking in the 4 to 8ft range activating outer reefs and moving sand banks dramatically. The swell and wave height should level off to around 3 to 6ft early Sunday. Light to moderate WNW to NW winds prevail all weekend long. Expect smaller 1 to 3ft SE leftovers on Monday, reinforced by new S swell Tuesday/Wednesday.
As previously discussed, this event is linked to a large, complex mid-latitude low that began to amalgamate over the southern Tasman Sea on Wednesday, before coalescing into a deeper storm-system immediately west of New Zealand on Thursday. As the low gradually intensified offshore on Wednesday and Thursday it established a broad, 20 to 35kt SW to SSW airflow that elongated out of eastern Bass Strait and off Tasmania, before elongating up the southern half of the NSW coast.
As the low deepened and moved directly over New Zealand on Friday it established a second, stronger fetch area located just west of the South Island. Friday morning’s satellite passes confirmed a 40kt plus SSE fetch spanning the low’s southern sector, extending as far north as the 40S parallel; roughly placing the head of the fetch 550 nautical miles southeast of Sydney.
The fetch is widely projected to remain in place over the next 12 to 18 hours, with some further northward extension towards 35S driving maximum significant wave-heights into the 25ft range over the south-eastern Tasman Sea on Friday night. A powerful pulse of SE groundswell spreading back towards the East Coast is now expected to show up across Sydney, Newcastle and the South Coast early on Saturday; leading in a powerful push in set waves into the 5 to 8ft range at breaks focussing the deep-water energy.
